Shih Chien University

About the university

The university was founded in 1958 as the Shih Chien College of Home Economics. It was renamed in 1979, became the Shih Chien College of Design and Management in 1991 and gained university status in 1997. Its main campus is in Zhongshan District, Taipei.

The Taipei campus includes the College of Design alongside the College of Human Ecology and the College of Management. Its motto is “Knowledge is the beginning of practice. Doing is the completion of knowing.”

Fashion at Shih Chien

The Department of Fashion Design was established in 1961 and is the oldest department at the university. The school describes it as the first higher-education fashion design institute in Taiwan. It sits within the College of Design, which has four departments: Industrial Design, Communications Design, Architecture and Fashion Design.

At the 2021 Taipei Fashion Week student show, the university presented work from the Department of Fashion Design in Taipei and from the fashion departments at its Kaohsiung campus.

Recognition

Shih Chien graduates have done well at Graduate Fashion Week in the UK. Po-Chieh Chiu won the Swarovski International Catwalk Award in 2017, Bao Wen Chen was the runner-up in 2018, and Angus Chiang won the Graduate Fashion Week International Show Award in 2013.

In 2018 the university was ranked seventh for internationalization in the Global Views Taiwan university ranking.
