National Institute of Design (NID)

Ahmedabad · 6 campuses across India

The National Institute of Design (NID) is India’s national design institute, founded in Ahmedabad in 1961. Fashion-related study sits mainly in textile and apparel design across its campuses.

About the institute

NID grew out of the 1958 India Report by Charles and Ray Eames, prepared for the Government of India. With Ford Foundation support and the Sarabhai family, the National Institute of Industrial Design opened in Ahmedabad in September 1961. It is now an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and an Institution of National Importance under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014.

Ahmedabad remains the main campus and offers Bachelor of Design in Textile Design. Gandhinagar hosts postgraduate work including Apparel Design. Further NIDs operate in Kurukshetra, Amaravati, Bhopal and Jorhat (including B.Des Textile & Apparel). This profile covers those six fashion-relevant campuses; NID’s Bengaluru campus is not listed here because it does not currently offer apparel or textile programmes.
