National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is India’s national fashion institute, set up in 1986 under the Ministry of Textiles. Its head office is in New Delhi and it runs campuses across the country.
About the institute
NIFT began in 1986 in a small part of Indraprastha Stadium in New Delhi, then moved to a campus in Hauz Khas. In 2006 it was declared a statutory institute under the NIFT Act, which empowers it to grant its own degrees.
The network has grown to 19 campuses, from Chennai, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Navi Mumbai in 1995 to Varanasi in 2024. NIFT offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in design, management and technology, and reports around 11,500 students. The digital camouflage uniform adopted by the Indian Army in 2022 was designed in association with NIFT.
