Editor’s pick
The Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź is a public art academy founded in 1945. Fashion is taught in the Institute of Fashion within its Faculty of Design.
About the school
The academy opened in spring 1945 as the State Higher School of Visual Arts, with the avant-garde artist Władysław Strzemiński as one of its founders. It took his name in the late 1980s and became an Academy of Fine Arts in 1996. Textile design became its leading faculty after the war, and textiles and clothing were later combined, reflecting Łódź’s history as Poland’s textile and clothing centre. It now has two faculties, Fine Arts and Design.
Fashion
The Institute of Fashion offers full-time first- and second-cycle degrees in fashion design, with studios for clothing design, footwear and leather accessories, knitwear, stage costume, sportswear and special-purpose clothing, and lingerie and recreational clothing. The academy describes its fashion design and jewellery degrees as unique in Poland and says students and graduates work with fashion and footwear companies, build their own brands and enter competitions. It does not currently teach in English.
