Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design
The Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University is China’s first higher education institution dedicated to arts and design. It traces its origins to the Central Academy of Arts & Design, founded in 1956, and teaches fashion in its Department of Textile and Fashion Design.
About the school
The Central Academy of Arts & Design was founded in 1956 and merged into Tsinghua University on 20 November 1999, becoming the Academy of Arts & Design. It comprises ten departments, from textile and fashion design to ceramics, industrial design and art theory, and is a full member of the Cumulus association.
Fashion
The academy says it pioneered fashion design as a four-year specialty in China in July 1982 and set up a Department of Fashion Design in 1984. Today the Department of Textile and Fashion Design has two majors, Textile Design and Fashion Design, and six teaching and research groups covering fibre art, interior textiles, textile CAD, fashion design, fashion engineering and fashion CAD. The undergraduate Fashion Design degree runs for four years.
